| A four-star hotel, the Hotel Monaco is located in Chicago’s Loop adjacent to the Chicago River and steps
away from the North Michigan Avenue shopping district and Millenium Park. A former hat factory constructed in 1910, the
renovation to the existing steel, concrete, and masonry structure included the removal of a 1950’s curtain wall and the
installation of a new, pre-fabricated, painted aluminum skin. Other new work included a re-planned hotel interior, a new basement
commercial kitchen, new building systems, new elevators, modifications to improve the fire safety of the structure, and improved
accessibility throughout the building. The final design strikes a balance between the desire for an architecture response appropriate
to the conclusion of the 20th Century, the rhythm and geometry of the existing structure, and the affordability of the technical solution. |
